A good training week

So returning from a weekend with the family. And a somewhat avg training weekend. It was time to turn the dial up. It is called the ironman ! Not sleep on the couch, eat nihari, and pie man . Ok well maybe if they made that a triathlon I would participate anyway.

I knew each day counted this week. I was able to get all of the scheduled workouts in, even the swims. Which for the lazy ass I am at 5am is a surprise.

It started off with a good swim monday , and then a run. On tuesday I joined the masters swim, to get royally whiped by doing a total of 3800yd swimming. I felt like a drowned rat at the end of the swim.

Wednesday felt strong on the bike doing some serious interval work. On the bike to work I hit hammered it home, and then ended with a 3mi brick run. The legs felt good. I was thinking ok this is not that bad I know I can run 3 at interval pace after 30mi of hammering a bike.

On thursday did a long run for 1 1/2 hrs. Which felt decent had to cut it short because I was not feeling well. And then took friday swim off. Finished the week with a total of 15hr of training for the week.

Bad Weather Days

Nothing puts the dampener on the mood than bad weather. Or maybe more when the weather changes from winter to wonderful spring, and then cold harsh winter again. I guess most would call that living in new england. I just call it the weather gods playing with our emotions. They give us a couple of good days, and then a thunderstorm. They give us a clear sunny day, and then a tornado. I am sure my college roommate would have something more educated/informed to say about the weather all I can say is “I want good biking weather”.

Saturday was horrible went out for 60 mi bike ride in cold miserable windy 32F weather. Cut it down to 20 mi and returned bushy tailed from west haven beaches.

Sunday didn’t even bother with the run.

Days off and day back

So after feeling completely burnt out from training, taking a couple of days of . I was ready to hit the workouts again. Started early monday with a long swim. And now have an entire 15hrs of workouts planned for this week.

Somebody has to explain to me that if I do this for 15 hrs, what do normal people who don’t do this do for the 15hrs. Hmmm, whenever I don’t workout like the maniac triathlete I find you have a lot more hours in the day.

So now I just have to worry about hitting these workouts on the money keeping the intensity and focus up. Then in 1 week do a power test.

3 days off

So I am burnt. My mind is running in circles from thinking about work, about grad school, and then finally the IM. So my simple solution is that to take 3 days off from IM training. I am still in week 3/4 of the training, so the consensus seems to be that I won’t lose a lot of fitness.

So the end of my 3 days is tomorrow. So far it has been relaxing. I am always suprised how much free time I have when I am not training.

Off and On Again

My training goes in waves, On again and off again. All of sudden at week 2 of a 3 week cycle I will lose interest in working out and will just need a break from everything. R blames it on the complete polar opposites I maintain where I workout for 20hrs for 2 weeks at a time and then drop to 5hrs. Just getting burnt out in the process.

So the plan from now to IM is to be consistent and to avoid these waves of training. Plan to train 10-20hrs and touch a couple of weeks with 25 but to maintain that as the threshold min.

16mi to 10mi

Had my 16 mile long run planned today. Typical with my luck on long runs the weather was awful. It was raining slightly and it was cold. Thankfully I was able to convince R that she would join me on her bike for the last 12miles.

The run started pretty well , my legs felt good and the weather was getting slightly better. By the time I was in Milford I was thinking this would be nice TP run back. I started doing 8min/miles to see how much I push myself. It was then on the backstretch that I started really feeling the strain of the weather and the run. By the time I was passing milford beach for the second time I decided that was it. I was Done. I stopped and took off my shoes and walked right into the ocean to cool down. 10miles at a tough I thought I would call it a day

Vdot 2

So my 2nd vdot test and as painful as it was I managed to run the 5k in 21:18 . Still not my best time but an improvment over the last time.

So my new vdot is 46.27 . I just have to make sure I can physically keep up the marathon pace for the entire 26.2 miles.

Being lazy

Its comes down to being lazy. Or just inherently burnt out.

Week 6 of the marathon training plan and I don’t feel like doing any workouts. This weekend was bad weather only went out for a bike ride and then skipped the run. Should have been the opposite

Through the week didn’t do any of the workouts, no run , no bikes. It grounds me to the fact that if I didn’t have this crazy routine how many hours in the day I have to do anything . Which in this case turns out to how many hours in day I have to do NOTHING.

Time to get back. Adjusted my plan a bit haven’t lost too many key workouts between now and novemeber. Plus the plan was sort of easy right now . Running 14 mi , that was something I was already conditioned for during tri season . So now its a matter of hitting those speed workouts, getting those long runs in.

Running vdot

Finally got around to doing a running vdot test. I have been meaning to do for a couple of months but have been busy training for specific races that taking a workout out to do a test like this was not possible.

So before anything my final vdot is 44 . My time 21:55 for 5k run with LT 175. A lot to be improved on. My legs were tired and aching from the crazy, getting lost, long run 10mi from the day before. Most coaches would say that it is a bad idea to do a vdot test after a long run but for the moment this will have to do. I had to establish a baseline for the rest of the marathon training.
