Running vdot

Finally got around to doing a running vdot test. I have been meaning to do for a couple of months but have been busy training for specific races that taking a workout out to do a test like this was not possible.

So before anything my final vdot is 44 . My time 21:55 for 5k run with LT 175. A lot to be improved on. My legs were tired and aching from the crazy, getting lost, long run 10mi from the day before. Most coaches would say that it is a bad idea to do a vdot test after a long run but for the moment this will have to do. I had to establish a baseline for the rest of the marathon training.

Different software

I finally got around to switching the software I use for my website. I have now gone through 4 different CMS/blog software (drupal, joomla, geeklog, wordpress) . I guess coming from a technical background and being more than anything inquisitive of what these different software offer I feel driven to try them. It also provides good research/ideas for my own work.

So I finally have switched to wordpress. For the moment this will have to do, since like everyone else I would imagine I don’t like to switch the software I use everyday.

IM lake placid 2010

1 week since my 70.3 race. Still a bit sore and my knees feel all of the steps in the last 6 mi in the run.
And in my crazy, blood glucose low mood I just signed up for doing ironman lake placid 2010. What was. I thinking ! All 140.6 mi . And this after watching the anguish and pain of the people doing it this year.

I had picked up rhian from the airport and we had driven straight to lake placid (with a side trip to kabab king). We had decided out of necessity to camp close to lp which turned out to be really nice. The camp site was a bit past the turn-off for wilmington. We were able to spend a lot of time in town enjoying the local brew.

On the day of the race we volunteered at the bike station and the run course. It made a fun way to pass the day.

And the next day I did sign up for next year. Yikes!!! Time to get into shape

70.3

I always enjoy doing the Musselman triathlon. The organization is incredible, incredible volunteers, gorgeous scenery, and it always awesome to have a race director who is done several races himself. They know the nerves a first-timer has the day before; they know how much time, effort, money you have spent to get to this point; they know what is going through an athletes head at 6am when he comes to the race site. They

It’s a great feeling to wake up the morning of the race. Even though it is 4am I am up and running , the adrenaline going through you. By the time 6am comes around, after a cup of coffee, I have usually calmed down and focused on the hours ahead. Continue reading “70.3”

Bike to Work

Living 30mi away from work creates a logistical, scheduling problem once you get to triathlon training. Since on most days I would spend atleast 2hrs commuting back-and-forth it leaves very little daylight to spend running or biking.
So like the past year, I decided to bike to work. The 30mi is on the fringe of what most people would consider to far. I think of it as doing my regular scheduled ride, working and then doing another ride. In the end I am hoping the long hours on the bike would build aerobic efficency. My only concern is that I am not going to fast, I avg around 17 mph which 3-4 mph slower than my regular pace. As the season goes on will have to sub some speed workout.
The bike route is interesting to say the least. I start off in milford and bike on rt 1 and rt 133 going to fairfield. During this time I have to go through the worst and best parts of bridgeport dealing with the worst of its traffic. After fairfield it is somewhat smooth sailing till I get some more traffic by norwalk. Barring traffic and bridgeport it makes for a scenic bike-ride.
I usually leave at around 6:45 and get in by 8:30. So in all not a bad morning and evening workout

Bikes

So rest assured I have a very “special” relationship with my bikes. It is as the level that car-maniacs have with their ultra tricked out ; double exhaust; custom chipped cars.

Mine is with my Bikes. Their beauty , elegance, aero-dynamic nature, and the fact they hardly every break down. I guess the latter is what attracts me to bikes. I find that nearly every other transportation mechanism requires a high degree of maintenance. From the car, motorbike to even trains. There are just so many electrical , mechanical part over time that require some degree of maintenance. And most require some of the transportation mechanism require some amount of CO2 producing fuel.
Whereas on a bike you are the engine. The engine doesn’t really need that much maintenance just the regular food you consume. And unless you have a crash no real break downs occur. From the perspective of the bike itself the maintenance is low, clean it regularly, tune the gears if need be, every once in a while replace tires or breaks.

As of late I own 2 bikes. My road bike a specialized tramac expert , and then my triathlon bike a specialized transition elite . Always looking at expanding collection. I am like the 5year old boy who ogles at all the bikes when he enters the bike store. Probably towards the end of the year I will look at getting a mountain bike (again) or possibly a cheaper road bike. Just for some winter riding.

Winter Running

Started running again after a 4 month interim due to my injury. Even though the injury was an elbow dislocation just didn’t feel the motivation to pound my body at 8mi/hr . Winter is probably the toughest time to pick up a sport or exercise in the northeast, everything slows down and the weather disrupts any training schedule.

I have to be honest I hate running in the winter. Karachi always had a temperate climate throughout the year. In NewYork starting December to March the weather makes it an interesting experience to workout outside. Continue reading “Winter Running”
